Chapter Sixteen

Charlie Day’s phone buzzed loudly on the bedside table. Opening one eye, she reached for the offending device, intending to silence it so she could go back to sleep. But her aim was off and she accidentally pressed Accept instead of Decline. Instantly, she heard Roger Calloway on the other end of the connection, calling her name.

“Charlie? Are you there? Charlie? I need to speak to you.”

Exhaling loudly, she sat up and grabbed the phone.

“I’m here,” she said, glancing at the clock. “What’s up?”

“Chase Grafton is what’s up,” Calloway shot back. “He’s already broken the news that Kirsty Bancroft’s gone missing from the hospital and Ramona Feeney has been killed.”

Suddenly wide awake, Charlie slid out of bed.

“And you’re surprised?” she asked in a low voice, not wanting to wake up Hale, who was still fast asleep. “Somehow Chase always manages to get a source.”

Pacing to the frosty window, she looked out onto the street. The weak winter sun was still low on the horizon, casting bleak shadows over the city streets.

“That’s not the worst of it,” Calloway said. “Apparently, he’s claiming on his latest podcast that the Fort Reverie PD requested a guard be stationed outside Kirsty’s room, but the FBI had insisted it wasn’t necessary.”

The special agent in charge sounded as if he was gritting his teeth on the other end of the connection.

“The idiot is also spouting off about an accomplice. He said, and I quote, ‘the Fort Reverie PD took Harlan Butterfield off the street, but now it looks as if he wasn’t in this alone. It’s pretty obvious he has an accomplice that abducted the victim from under the FBI’s nose.”

Charlie’s eyes widened.

“He’s blaming us for not posting a guard? That was Guffey’s call. And alleging Harlan Butterfield worked with an accomplice to orchestrate Kirsty’s abduction and Ramona’s murder from his prison cell? Based on what evidence?”

She gripped the phone tighter as she pictured Chase Grafton’s smug face.

“He doesn’t need evidence to create a PR disaster for the Bureau,” Calloway said. “All he needs is a source willing to tell him what he wants to hear.”

Charlie knew he was right. And it didn’t take an FBI agent to figure out that whoever was feeding Chase Grafton information worked within the Fort Reverie PD.

“Just find out what’s going on out there in Fort Reverie,” Calloway said. “If Harlan Butterfield isn’t our guy, then you need to find out who is before the case blows up in our face.”

Realizing he’d ended the call, Charlie looked over her shoulder to see Hale sitting up in the bed.

He gave her a sleepy smile as he brushed a tangle of dark hair from his forehead.

“I take it that was Calloway?”

“Yep, we have a PR problem which has somehow become my problem,” she said.

Before she could give into temptation and crawl back under the warm covers, her phone buzzed again.

“It’s the lab,” she said, feeling a pang of excitement. “Let’s hope they found something.”

Recognizing Vivian Burke’s cool, all-business voice on the other end, Charlie didn’t waste time on pleasantries.
